It’s matter of few hours now and Pakistan and Sri Lanka are ready to meet in the first ODI of Asia Cup 2014. Both the sides have got all the flair and that much needed variety in their lineups and it’s going to be a scintillating finish for sure. The match is scheduled to start at 14:00 local time and is scheduled at Fatullah, Bangladesh.
Pakistan are the favorites as they go into this encounter considering the way they played against Sri Lanka earlier this year in Dubai. Mohammad Hafeez was the most successful batsman for them and scored 3 centuries in just 5 matches while stays not out twice. The find of the tour were Mohammad Talha and Sharjeel Khan who impressed in their respective departments and will now be the part of playing XI today. Another promising prospect for Pakistan cricket, Sohaib Maqsood, can play a key role with the bat in the middle order as he has impressed a lot in his short career scoring 363 runs in 10 ODIs he has played so far at an average of 40.33. To top it all, he has a brilliant strike rate of 81.57. Fawad Alam is also making his come back to the squad and might get an out today. His selection in the squad is backed by some hefty performances back home in domestic cricket.
Besides, Umar Gul, Junaid Khan and Saeed Ajmal will play a crucial role with the ball. Gull made a really impressive comeback against Sri Lanka in the last series in UAE. He picked up 7 wickets in 3 matches he played on the tour and will be the spearhead of Pakistan bowling attack today.
Sri Lanka on the other hand will be planning to take revenge of the series defeat in UAE. They boast of the performance they have given in Bangladesh against Bangladesh of late. Most of their players have been amongst runs in last two matches and their lead bowlers have also performed brilliantly. Sangakkara scored a brilliant hundred getting 128 in 2nd ODI while Kusal Perera scored a scintillating 106 in 3rd ODI against Bangladesh. Perera will be a major threat for Pakistan as he scored heavily in UAE as well. Besides, Sri Lanka will majorly relying on their stalwarts Jayawardene, Dilshan and Sangakkara and will expect players like Chandimal, Mathews and Priyanjan to chip in with handy performances.
On the bowling front, Malinga, Senanayake and Prasanna can play a vital role. Particularly Prasanna and Senanayake were hard to handle for the Pakistani batsmen in the series they played in UAE. Against Bangladesh, in their most recent series, Mendis and Thisara Perera were also amongst wickets.
